What did you see at Mass today?

Me? A lady brought in two dachsuns during the post Communion meditation.

Can't say life is boring!

You have GOT to be kidding me! Um...did someone, maybe one of the ushers, kindly explain that dogs don't belong at Mass?

I love dogs myself (you know that) but...uh...they have their place. Elsewhere!

What did I see?

Let's start with what I heard inside. Our parish's slide into musical banality continues, as the new would-be jazz pianist in the sanctuary played a collection of pop songs accompanied by our all-too-willing cantor. There couldn't have been more than forty worshippers in a parish that sits in the busiest neighborhood in the city.

Now let's examine what I saw outside. Today was the day for our parish's much-hyped "Ministry Fair," a collection of volunteer-staffed booths ostensibly designed to "get more people involved." While it was nice to see the new Respect Life group represented, most of the booths were reserved for sections of the parish's torpid bureaucracy. (Moreover, the laity are called to the apostolate, not ministry.)

The "Liturgical Ministries" booth was almost comical, as it featured information on "Eucharistic ministers" (an illicit term for Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion), "Mass coordinators" (a role by the Church), and "lectors" (a proper function that does not exist at the parish).

All in all, the Ministry Fair promotion was akin to putting a fresh coat of wax on a car with no engine.

"a role not recognized by the Church," above.

Hmmm, well, I don't think that I can come close to dogs in church but I did wrestle with my 6year old and my 15month old while trying to listen to Fr. Schmitmeyer, mentally cursing at myself about why I decided to take them both to mass.

BTW--what ended up happening to the dogs?? I'm having a hard time believing they were seeing eye dogs--dachsuns are such small dogs.

I saw Father Hank present a great Mass that touched me. I can walk in a chapel now and feel the Holy Spirit.

I was on vacation in Oregon and went to Mass and found a church where it was absent.

I prayed and prayed.

Come to our Oktoberfest this Saturday night!
