Should Women be Ordained Catholic Priests? (video report)

Fox's local station, Channel 19 in Cincinnati, did a video report that aired last night during the 10:00 pm news on Women's Ordination in the Church. I was interviewed for the report, which runs to three minutes in length:

My quibble: she asks 'Where is it in the Bible?' Remember, we hold that Jesus is the Revelation of God in the fullness and that His Revelation is expressed both in written form in the Scriptures, but also in living form in Tradition. And it is quite apparent from both, taken together, that this is something that cannot change.

All in all, though, I am happy with the report. The truth was conveyed.

Nicely done. The woman claiming women should be priests first doesn't know her Ecclesiology, doesn't understand the Theology of the Church (Bride of Christ, Christ as Bridegroom), nor is she willing to accept authority outside of her own will. She also doesn't understand history, Mary Magdalene's role, Mary the Mother of God's role....etc.

I'm glad you got the last word.

I didn't catch where she said in the Bible that MM was ordained or called an Apostle.

It was good, but I think they could have done a better job at not cutting you off right before explaining something more in detail.

Chris,

I explained at one point that the difficulty is that Catholic theology doesn't break down well into sound bites, we have to know that and how to overcome it.

It is amazing to me that some women miss the fact that the Church is modeled on a woman. In mystical language as Bride but also in practicality: She is Mother and Teacher. Not even the Magdalen could say that of herself (and wouldn't consider it anyhow), but only of Mary. Oh, anyway, good job, Fr. Schnippel --dealing with especially today's media MOs is not something for the faint or unsure of heart. God bless you.

There is no denying the fact that Jesus chose 12 men for apostolic ministry, or that he gave them the power to cure the sick and to cast out demons. There is no denying the fact that Mary Magdalene's apostolic ministry was specific and limited, she was sent by Christ to inform Peter and the others that he had risen. In other words, she was given a specific prophetic mission. We can call this an apostolic mission, but only because she was sent by Jesus, not because she was chosen to be an apostle in the same way the 12 were.

Thanks for sharing this to us Father. May God bless you in your priestly ministry.

What's that, you say you can't find it in the Bible?

"And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen." (John 21:25)

That wasn't too bad, especially coming from the worst news station in town! It's a hard argument to make in a short time, but I'm glad they included the part about the Jewish priesthood -- I think that's particularly telling.

Today, when so many people don't know how to make a decent argument, sometimes the most important thing is just making an argument that holds together -- that memory can can stick with people for a long time and nudge them toward looking into things themselves eventually.

Did someone just say "make a decent argument"???

Fr. Kyle, I meant the story wasn't too bad, not your interview!

That woman used to be in charge of the LPMP program???? It must have been quite the thing! I can't imagine. Well, wait. I guess I can.

Gail,

I certainly understood your comment!

You did a great job, Father.

One comment: I think your argument about the incongruity of a female priest being wedded to a feminine Church will become less and less understandable to a culture which is embracing homosexual "marriages".

Fair coverage from an unlikely local source. Great work!

Act 2:16 But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;
Act 2:17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:
Act 2:18 And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:
