Old St. George's Church Burns

Local news coverage has broken in to give reports that the dual steeples at Old St. George's Church in Clifton/University Heights/University of Cincinnati area have collapsed in a 3 alarm fire. The church was built in the 1880's I think, and is on the National Register of Historic Places, but had been closed as a parish and was recently used as a reception hall, among other events.

The good news is that there seems to be no injuries nor loss of life.

Not to call you out, but it was built in 1873. I used to live there and take care of the place for a couple of years. It was the most amazing place, and home to many of us. I was married there, and always hoped to have it in my life again. I pray that UC and the business association don't use this as an excuse to tear it down. Thanks for mentioning it though...

Thanks for the correction, couldn't quite remember the date as I wrote this out. The fact remains, we've lost an historic structure that, even though it was no longer used as a Catholic Church, still reflected the beauty and faith of the emergent Catholic population and stood as a witness to that faith to a major secular university that shared its borders. Your fears are my fears, too: UC and the business association will use this to sieze the land and tear the rest down.
