Our next conference will be held at Our Lady of the Holy Spirit Center on Sunday, April 26th, 2009, from 7:00 to 8:30 PM. Fr. Benedict O’Cinnsealaigh, Dean of Formation at Mount St. Mary’s Seminary, will delivering the Key note address. Again, Adoration precedes the conference from 6:00 – 6:45 for those who are interested.
Things here in the Vocation Office continue to be very busy. We had a very successful ‘Cast Your Nets’ youth event this past Sunday, with well over 200 teens gathered in praise and worship of Our Lord and a fantastic presentation by Mother Seraphina of the Franciscan Daughters of Mary, who are based in Covington, Kentucky.
Looking towards the future, please pray for the men who are applying for entrance to the seminary this fall. There are two weekend events coming up for those who are interested in entering the seminary this fall: Welcome Weekend at Mount St. Mary’s Seminary on March 13 and 14 and Live-In Weekend at the Pontifical College Josephinum on April 16-18. Please keep the men who are attending these events in your prayers as well.
May you all have a Blessed and Holy Season of Lent and come to a experience the joy of Easter in an ever deeper way.

St. Cecilia's in Cincinnati's Oakley neighborhood is hosting a St. Michael's Prayer Warrior Conference, beginning at 7 pm this evening. Fr. Earl Fernandes, Dean of Mount St. Mary's Seminary in Cincinnati, will be delivering his same address given two weeks ago at St. Mary's, Piqua. It truly is an excellent talk on the call to greatness. Adoration begins at 6.

Call of the King Conferece coming soon

On Sunday, January 18th, the Vocation Office of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati is hosting our second 'Call of the King Conference,' which is part of the St. Michael Prayer Warriors lay apostolate at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 528 Broadway Street, Piqua, Ohio, 45356. The evening begins with a Holy Hour for Vocations from 6:00 to 6:45, with the conference following from 7:00 to 8:30. Keynote speaker is Fr. Earl Fernandes, Academic Dean at Mount St. Mary's Seminary, and addresses 'Personal Holiness as an Avenue for Renewal in the Church.' Fr. Jason Bedel of Holy Angels, Sidney, and Mr. Andrew Cordonnier, 4th College Seminarian from St. Remy in Russia will give personal testimony as to how the prayers of the faithful have helped in their discernment of the priesthood.

Stunned, Absolutely Stunned!
So, we had our little event last night.
I had heard increasing buzz from different sectors leading up to the Call of the King Conference, and I was getting hopeful. Optimistically, I was thinking around 200 total for the event would be outstanding.
I was wrong. Way Wrong!
Finally tally was around 350-375!
As we started the Holy Hour at 6:00, there were maybe 40 in the Chapel at the Center. Ok, I thought, it is a start, we'll see how it goes.
I was kneeling in front of the Monstrance and leading the rosary, slowly the volume level started to build.
I gave a short reading from Hebrews and a reflection, we were approaching 80 by that point, I would say.
The Litany of Vocations started to build and build. I was starting to get very excited.
Finally, Benediction and replacing the monstrance in the Adoration Chapel. There were fifteen minutes before the event 'started' and the crowd was swelling.
My feet were off the floor!
I saw all of our speakers, made a quick connection with them. I found a few of the team members and they were beaming. The Chant started playing over the sound system, the chapel was mostly quiet.
7:00 hit, and I approached the pulpit and turned. STUNNED! The chapel was FULL!
In my wildest dreams, I expected this size of a crowd in three years, not now. I talked to one team member after the event, she was in full out panic mode (in a good way): more coffee! we're out of folders! SEATS for everyone!
Then the talk started by Fr. Brausch. Engaging, intellectual, solid, and applicable.
Two seminarians followed him up and drove the point home, exactly!
Finally, Anne approached and didn't hit a home run, not even a Grand Slam; she hit a Grand Slam while also pitching a perfect game!
To all those who attended, thank you very much.
For all those who prayed for the event, without you it wouldn't have happened in such a dramatic way.
The conference was recorded, so CDs will be available shortly.

As an added bonus...
So, first, how did I miss this yesterday when I knew it was going to be in the paper?
Renewed and refreshed - that is the prayer a group of Cincinnatians are wishing on their priests.
The new group, the St. Michael Prayer Warriors, will begin their prayer movement on Sunday with a "Call of the King" conference from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Our Lady of the Holy Spirit Center, 5440 Moeller Ave., Norwood.
"People will be praying for their parish and diocesan priests - for his holiness, for his renewal and for his energy," said the Rev. Kyle Schnippel, director of vocations for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati.
Schnippel said the new ministry chose St. Michael because of his image as the leader of God's army.
"We wanted an identity of people coming together to fight for the faith - in big ways and in small ways," he said. "We believe prayer with intention to support priests and more vocations to the priesthood and religious life can have an impact."

The Importance of Prayer for our Priests
While I was away enjoying all the fine comforts Akron can offer (Luigi's anyone?); the Catholic Telegraph (paper for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati) ran my next column:
The Importance of Prayer for our Priests
One of the downfalls of being a full time teacher when I was a newly ordained priest was the fact that I was scheduled for the early morning Mass every day before heading off to the high school. While ‘morning people’ might rejoice in this prospect, it was admittedly a struggle for me to adjust my schedule to a 6:30 a.m. start time. Much to my surprise, a relationship quickly formed between me and the sixty to eighty attendees of that early Mass, and I started to look forward and enjoy these quiet Masses before heading off to the high school. I realized that just as I was sacrificing for my parishioners, they too were sacrificing for me; a family relationship grew and we all flourished.
It was an odd shift happening before my eyes: I, a celibate priest, was becoming a father. Even though most of the congregation was much older than me, I was giving them the strength and encouragement to start the day, just as my human father used to do when I was much younger. We had become a family, and I know now that just as I was praying for them, they were praying for me. We were sealed in Christ, united to become His Body, present to the world.
This reciprocal prayer becomes a vital and necessary aspect of life in the parish, for it is in prayer that the body is truly made one. However, it is not an easy thing to foster, especially as our lives grow more and more hectic, both in the families of the parish, but also on the part of the priest. Hence, we must make this union of prayer much more explicit than it ever has been before.
Into this need, the Vocation Office is proud to announce the formation of a new apostolate within the Archdiocese of Cincinnati: St. Michael Prayer Warriors. This movement is designed to bring the lay faithful of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati together in prayer for our Archbishop, priests and seminarians, as well as an increase of vocations to the priesthood and religious life.
There are two reasons to bring this movement together. First, prayer is effective. I can tell in my life when my prayer life has grown weak or I have neglected my prayer responsibilities; things that usually come very easy become very difficult. Secondly, as St. Paul reminds us: love is the mark of the Christian community, and the expression of love is to sacrifice and pray for one another.
However, we have not been formed in prayer as we should, and the question arises: How do we pray for each other? It seems like such a simple question, yet the spiritual masters have been writing on this very topic for 2,000 years.
To help begin the apostolate of St. Michael Prayer Warriors, the Vocation Office is hosting the inaugural ‘Call of the King Conference’ on Sunday, September 21, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the evening at the Our Lady of the Holy Spirit Center, 5440 Moeller Avenue in Norwood, Ohio. The event features Fr. Anthony Brausch, speaking on the pursuit of individual holiness and renewal within the Church. Several priests and seminarians will also speak on how the prayers of the faithful have made a difference in the following of their vocation as a priest. The event is free of charge, so bring your friends and fellow parishioners as well.

Dominic and Francis embracing poverty and St. Ignatius of Loyola’s challenge to teaching the faith up to today’s new orders embracing the wisdom of Tradition; all movements of renewal have been led by great saints who have called the faith to a new embrace of the Gospel. During the inaugural ‘Call of the King’ Conference, Fr. Anthony Brausch, faculty member of Mount St. Mary’s Seminary, will apply the lessons of history to the modern day and priests and seminarians will share their testimony as to how the prayers of the laity have helped and encouraged them in their response to God’s call to be a priest.

Responding the Holy Father's call for an increase in prayer for vocations, the Vocation Office of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati is pleased to announce the formation of 'Prayer Warriors,' a lay apostolate formed to encourage Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament for the renewal of the priesthood and an increase of vocations.
"A member of a local parish approached me several months ago with this idea of gathering the laity to pray for their priests," remarked Fr. Kyle Schnippel, Director of Vocations for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. "She noticed that priests were 'under attack' and that morale among the presbyterate was, seemingly, low. She wanted to do something about it, which I was happy to oblige."
Members of 'Prayer Warriors' agree to the following three aspects: 1) one hour of prayer before the Blessed Sacrament for stated intentions, 2) voluntary acts of penance and/or sacrifice for the renewal of the priesthood and for vocations, and 3) acts of charity in support of bishops and priests.
Communication of the monthly prayer requests will be done through a monthly newsletter which will be distributed both electronically through www.cincinnativocations.org and at a Mass on the fourth Friday of every month held at the Our Lady of the Holy Spirit Center. Information will also be sent to parishes within the Archdiocese, through pastors and parish vocation committees, with the expectation that they will make the materials available to their parishioners.
To help spread the message of the need for prayer for priests and vocations, a Prayer Warriors Kick Off event will be held in September at the Our Lady of the Holy Spirit Center. Details are still being worked out, watch this space for further developments.
